What is Tulsi a.k.a Holy Basil?

by Nanci March 30, 2019
written by Nanci

Tulsi (ocimum sanctum), which is often referred to as holy basil, is a potent herb that has been used in India for thousands of years to treat colds, coughs, and the flu. According to Ayurveda, holy basil promotes purity and lightness in the body, cleansing the respiratory tract of toxins, and relieving digestive gas and bloating. Holy basil leaves offer a rich source of essential oil, containing eugenol, nerol, camphor, and a variety of terpenes and flavonoids. The oil is a strong antiseptic against many kinds of disease-causing organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and parasites.

As the name would imply, holy basil has spiritual as well as medicinal significance in Ayurveda. In Hindu mythology, the plant is an incarnation of the goddess Tulsi, offering divine protection. Many Indian families keep a living holy basil plant in their homes, and tend to it with great care and reverence. The plant’s woody stalks are often made into beads used in meditation malas or rosaries.

Although basil is found on every continent, holy basil is indigenous to the Indian subcontinent. It is a bushy shrub that grows to about 18 inches in height. Its leaves are oval and serrated, with colors ranging from light green to dark purple, depending on the variety. In the wild, holy basil is an annual, but it can be kept as a perennial by trimming it before it forms seeds. The plant has delicate lavender-colored flowers, and its fruit consists of tiny rust-colored nuts.

The Potential Health Benefits of Holy Basil

Holy basil’s oil has antioxidant properties that help reduce the damaging effects of stress and aging on the body. Studies have shown that it protects healthy cells from the toxicity of radiation and chemotherapy. Holy basil also has anti-depression properties. Additionally, it has been shown to help people with:

  • Acne
  • Asthma
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Heart disease
  • Inflammation
  • Kidney Stones
  • Lung disorders
  • Respiratory disorders

Holy Basil and the Doshas

Holy basil carries the bitter, pungent, and astringent tastes, and generates a warming influence on the physiology. The herb is predominantly Kapha-reducing, but it can also be used to pacify Vata and Pitta. It can, however, have a mildly Pitta-aggravating effect in people who are severely overheated.

How to Use Holy Basil

Use holy basil freely in your cooking and in making freshly brewed tea. If you’re making tea, simply cover 2 teaspoons of fresh holy basil with 1 cup of boiling water, and let it steep for about 5 minutes. Strain the leaves before drinking.

To benefit from the health-promoting effects, nibble on a few leaves every day. If you’re taking holy basil for stress relief, try growing your own plant from seeds or cuttings (directions on how to grow your own plant are below).

You can also take holy basil in capsule or tablet form. Dosages will depend on your particular health concern. Talk to your health care practitioner to determine what dosage would be best for you.

Precaution: Some research suggests that holy basil might have a mild anti-fertility effect, but this type of practice has been limited to rural areas of India. If you are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant, talk to your health care practitioner before taking medicinal doses of holy basil.

How to Grow Your Own Holy Basil Plant

Place the seeds between warm, moist paper towels for a day, and then plant them a half-inch below the surface in rich potting soil.

A sprout will start to break through in 10 days. Once the plant reaches a height of about 12 inches, you can 1) pinch back any flowers to keep it from going to seed; or 2) allow the plant to seed and start a new generation.

Holy basil prefers full sunlight and plenty of water.

*Destination Feature* House Boating in Alipe, Kerala

by Nanci February 19, 2019
written by Nanci

During our 6 night stay in Varkala we break things up a bit by heading out for a night to one of India’s most beautiful spots, the Backwaters of Kerala. Kerala is an amazing, lush jungle state on the south west coast of India and was named by National Geographic as one of the ’50 Destinations of a Lifetime’ in a special collectors issue. The Backwaters is a massive water system running parallel to the Arabian Sea with over 900KM of rivers, lakes and canals connecting 5 serene lakes. We spend the day cruising around this amazing area and then sleep peacefully docked at the river side.

We hop on the boat at around noon in Alipe, the most popular destination in Kerala for house boating. From here we cruise out and begin exploring the jungle, villages and rice paddies. Soon we enjoy lunch, an upscale take on classic, very light Keralan food. Historically, the people of North India have had more money than those of the South, so here we find less rich ingredients in the food. Instead of creams and sugars they use steam, water and fresh spices to cook and flavor the food. The people of the south also generally work very hard labor jobs so even the fried snacks are usually made with powdered lentils, brown rice and other legumes or grains.

The beautiful Backwaters of Kerala

At this point in the trip we have been together a couple of weeks so we really have a chance here to unwind, connect and reflect as we cruise down the canals, enjoying the sunshine. Dinner comes as the sun sets and then we have some more time to relax. On the boat there is a large open space upstairs so if the group is feeling it we hold a yoga class; anything from a passive yin experience to Hatha, meditation or some energy work. The house boat experience is very, very ‘shanti’ (peaceful), as the Indians say, and the time here is yours to enjoy as you wish. We wake to a beautiful breakfast and slowly make our way back to dock before heading back to Varkala for a couple more nights.

5 Tips for Transitioning Smoothly into Spring

by Nanci February 10, 2019
written by Nanci

“Since this is the season in which the universal energy begins anew and rejuvenates, one should attempt to correspond to it directly by being open and unsuppressed, both physically and emotionally.” –Nei Jing

One of the most anticipated seasonal transitions is winter to spring. After a long period of hibernation and reflection, our bodies are primed and ready for movement and active expression. As the days get progressively longer and incrementally warmer, our spirit, much like the buds starting to form on the trees, is longing to burst forth and bloom. While these erratic transitional weeks can feel restraining, by employing these simple steps we can handle the fluctuations with grace and enter into the next phase of nature’s cycle with ease.

  1. Get Up and Go!– Spring is the season of the Liver channel and it’s corresponding element of Wood. It is a time of rebirth, reawakening, growth and expansion – a metamorphosis best realized through action. To keep joints healthy and muscles and tendons supple, we are encouraged to create heat in the body and extend our limbs. So open up and stretch toward the sun, raise your heart rate, explore deep twists and side bends, tap into your creativity and give physical expression to your ambitions!

  1. Get Ahead of your Allergies– While seasonal allergies can put a serious damper on our enjoyment of the warmer weather, don’t fear the impending pollen! Herbal medicine combined with regular acupuncture can get you through the season virtually symptom free. For best results, start treatments beforeyour symptoms appear. If you do suffer from seasonal allergies some good foods to incorporate into your diet include ginger, onions, garlic, bamboo shoots, cabbage, beets, carrots, leafy greens and yams. Some foods to avoid are wheat, citrus, chocolate, shellfish, dairy and potatoes.

  1. Eat for the Season– Anyone who’s had a treatment from me has had the discussion about why it’s important to eat locally and seasonally. Foods that are available in your region at any given point in time tend to contain the temperature properties that your body needs in that season. To stay balanced in the spring, it is good to start introducing sour foods back into your diet. This includes things like lemon, vinegar, berries, apricots, grapefruit, kiwi, tamarind and coriander. The liver also benefits from natural detoxifiers such as spinach, dandelion, green apple and kale. If you’re feeling tense, avoid alcohol and greasy or spicy foods.

  1. Stabilize the Emotions– In TCM theory, the Liver channel is responsible for the unencumbered flow of emotion.  When liver qi stagnates it can cause emotional depression or a feeling of tension. If left unchecked, it can lead to anger, irritability, or rage and inhibit our judgment and ability to make sound decisions. In this period of expression, let no obstacle block you from the fulfillment of your desire. Relieve tension in the way your body responds best, avoid external stressors, and use the momentum of the season to execute the plans that most excite you.

  1. Cover Your Neck– I always administer this piece of advice in the spring and fall. Spring is the season of wind and when the wind enters the body it can manifest as tremors, dizziness, muscle spasms, stiff neck and headaches. The easiest way to protect yourself is cover your neck. With drastic temperature swings from day to day, it’s hard to choose your outerwear, so keep your neck protected by wearing a scarf.

The Insider’s Guide to Travel in Thailand Like a Yogi

by Nanci January 20, 2019
written by Nanci

Thailand is an amazing country with much to offer for all sorts of travelers. Nature lovers rejoice in its beautiful beaches and astonishing landscapes; party animals won’t find a better nightlife than the one in Bangkok; foodies can treat their palates to the delicious Thai cuisine; backpackers find ease in their pockets with the affordable lifestyle of Thailand; and yogis are delighted with the deeply ingrained spiritual culture in this part of the world.

It is a fantastic destination for yoga practitioners. There is a wide variety of yoga studios, yoga retreats and workshops held year round, along with massage training programs, meditation retreats, organic permaculture farms, natural healing and Ayurvedic offerings.

No wonder why, in recent years, Thailand has steadily become one of the most visited countries in the world. In fact, according to the World Tourism Rankings by the UN, it is currently the second Asian country with most visitors per year (32,588,303 in 2016), just behind China; and it is ranked 14 in the world above some highly touristic nations like Austria, Greece or Canada!

At BookYogaRetreats.com we want to provide you with all the tools you need if you’re planning an unforgettable yoga experience in Thailand. That’s why we partnered with some bloggers who have lived in Thailand and love yoga the way we do, to share some of their best kept secrets in this insider’s guide to get the most out of your time in the Land of Smiles. They’re Anne and Brandon from The Yoga Nomads; Amélie from Mostly Amélie; and Alana from Paper Planes, who have given their advice to travel in Thailand like a true yogi!

Thai traditions you should be aware of

First and foremost, it is very important to know the traditions of Thai people before you arrive. And while there are many aspects that are different from the Western side of the world, there is one thing you should never forget: beware of your feet! “Pointing your feet at others, touching the feet and propping your feet up on a chair or table are considered rude in Thai culture” warn Anne and Brandon.

But why is it that feet are so problematic in Thailand? To understand this ideology a bit better, Alana Morgan explains that “Thais believe the feet are the lowliest, dirtiest part of the body and it’s seen as disrespectful and offensive to show the bottom of your foot”. That’s why it is also disrespectful to leave your hiking boots dangling on the outside of your backpack, so be careful if the purpose of your trip is a hiking adventure.

You should also bare in mind the following tips to blend in the Thai culture and make sure you don’t disrespect anyone:

  • Despite being hot and sunny all year round, people in Thailand dress modestly and are usually covered up. While showing skin is expected at the beach, and areas that see a lot of tourists are used to the way Western tourists dress, wearing strappy yoga gear out in public really isn’t very appropriate.
  • Many Thai people greet one another by placing their hands, palms together at heart center. It is a sign of respect.
  • It is not uncommon to take off your shoes before entering a temple or spiritual dwelling. It’s important to take note of this as you enter various places during your travels and remove your shoes.
  • Always dress modestly when visiting holy sites. Cover your knees and shoulders. And never point your feet at the Buddha when sitting!

Must dos for yogis in Thailand

Most visitors head down to the islands of Koh Phangan, Koh Samui or Koh Tao. And they’re popular for a good reason. The North of Koh Phangan Island is Amélie’s personal paradise for example “Many people know only of the full moon party; the northernmost part of the island is still very unknown to a lot of people. There are amazing yoga schools, secluded beaches, vegan restaurants, and magical untouched forest all around. There’s also a Buddhist temple that offers a ten-day silent Vipassana meditation retreat high on a mountain. Definitely a must!” she describes.

Alana Morgan, on the other hand, is a blogger who has lived in Chiang Mai for the past five years and has completely fallen in love with northern Thailand even though it doesn’t have a beach. “I could never get sick of the jungle-covered mountains and rice fields outside of town. The greenery and welcoming atmosphere more than make up for the lack of beach and there is a ton to do – from checking out the town’s burgeoning cafe scene (coffee grows in the mountains), to visiting Elephant sanctuaries, to indulging in some of the tastiest and cheapest food in the country.”

The Yoga Nomads agree with Alana, and they think Chiang Mai and Pai are the two places to visit for yogis. “These two northern cities are conducive to the yogic lifestyle with a variety of places to find healthy food and plenty of spots to practice yoga. If beaches are more your thing, Koh Lanta hasn’t been overrun by tourism quite as much as the other islands yet still has stunning views and wildlife” they say.

Best place to meditate or do yoga

There are so many beautiful places throughout the country and such an emphasis in living here and now, that it’s hard not to feel inspired to practice yoga anywhere in Thailand. However, our insiders have shared their favorite places to relax, find peace and be mindful:

  • Yoga Nomads – Mar Ngat Dam and Reservoir.
  • Amélie – Koh Phangan.
  • Alana Morgan – For meditation, all Thai Buddhist temples dotted across the country. For yoga, a studio in Chiang Mai that’s situated in a traditional wooden Thai house surrounded by a tropical garden

More adventurous activities for yogis

If you’re looking to add some adrenaline to your visit and complement your yoga practice, there are some activities that will for sure enrich your stay in Thailand. The Yoga Nomads recommend to try snorkeling, diving and rock climbing “Thailand is known for their turquoise beaches and stunning limestone cliffs, which are great places to do these activities. Yoga compliments each of these in unique ways, but one common way is by using your breath. Creating awareness in your body and mind around your breath can influence your performance.”

And if you have a truly adventurous soul who want to try something very unique, Amélie thinks that you definitely need to try free diving. “Free diving, or free immersion, relies on your ability to calm your mind, breathe deeply, and hold your breath until resurfacing. It is such a calming and soothing experience, and pranayama exercises really come in handy. Truly the best yoga companion.” She explains.

Tips for travelers on a budget

Having an insider’s advice when traveling is very helpful to have a better grasp of the culture, visit not-so-popular places, and of course, to not overspend your money in touristic places or restaurants that aren’t normally worth a visit. Though the cost of living in Thailand is already quite affordable compared to most western cities, it never hurts to have some tips to make your money go further.

  • Stick to Thai food. And don’t you worry about eating in the street, often times it can even be better than restaurants since it is typically made to order (meaning, fresher) and always dirt cheap! “We recommend seeking out the street food stands that are busy and have a lot of locals in front” say the Yoga Nomads.
  • Buy at thelocal farmer’s market. You could get very affordable fruit and veggies as snacks on the go.
  • Use local transportation. It will always be cheaper than flights, taxis or private cars. Riding scooters is very common and you’ll likely find yourself driving one or sitting at the back of one.
  • Find a roommate. Either your travel partner or a new friend, finding a private room for two (or dorm style if that’s your thing) is a way to cut costs on accommodation while traveling in general
  • Unfortunately, yoga classes at studios in Thailand aren’t much cheaper compared to other destinations, but they’re worth the splurge for practicing in some gorgeous, tropical spaces.

11 Things you must bring

For your convenience, in collaboration with our insiders, we’ve put together a list of things that will make your life easier while in Thailand. Don’t forget to include these items on your packing checklist:

  • A travel yoga mat.
  • Light loose clothes. Preferably air-wicking and fast-drying yoga clothes (it’s humid in Thailand!).
  • Reusable water bottle. It’s hard to get safe drinking water in Southeast Asia. Instead of buying a lot of plastic water bottles which hurt your budget and the environment, bring your own.
  • A carry-on size backpack. The last thing you want to do is lug around 50 pounds’ worth of stuff you won’t use. A small bag not only lightens the load physically, but mentally too.
  • A place to write your thoughts as you experience, learn and grow in ways you never imagined before.
  • A big-ass knife for foraging coconuts in the forest – as literarily suggested by Amélie.
  • Bikini or swimming trunks.
  • Palo Santo stick.
  • An open mind. It is difficult to get the experience you want if you don’t have an open mind.
  • Things here are different than home and often run on Thai time (later than expected) but that’s part of the country’s charm.

Tips for Colds & Flu

by Nanci January 6, 2019
written by Nanci

When was the last time you suffered from cold or flu symptoms? Some people contract a flu virus every year or multiple times a year. From a sore throat or a sinus infection to bronchitis or pneumonia, a flu virus can trigger a host of unwanted and even life-threatening symptoms and conditions. Today you will learn about the different flu varieties, the shifting flu “season”, ways to prevent flu viruses from wreaking havoc, and the supplements, foods, and measures you can take to heal from the flu.

Colds

The rhinoviruses that caused the common cold have been superseded by flu viruses that are much stronger. Now, it is likely that someone experiencing cold-like symptoms actually has a mild flu variety. Another reason you may experience cold-like symptoms is because your body is doing an incredible job of fighting off whatever virus maybe trying to infiltrate your system. If you’re sneezing, sniffling, or complaining of a ticklish throat, you’re most likely dealing with a strain of the flu.

Flu Season

You may think of flu season as limited to the fall and winter months, but this is no longer the case. Although flus may be most rampant during the wintertime, there are now waves of flus occurring all year round. Even in the summer it is important to take protective measures because flus can abound during June, July, and August as well. During these warm months, people still find themselves dealing with sinus infections, stomach flus, bronchitis, and more.

One reason for this never-ending flu season is the rise in international travel. For example, when it is winter in Australia and flus are rampant, countless people hop on planes and travel from Australia to places experiencing summertime, such as the United States. In these instances, many people carry various flu strains along with them. This is also true when it is wintertime in the U.S. and people travel abroad to Australia and other countries, knowing or unknowingly bringing flu viruses along for the ride.

Instead of thinking in terms of seasons, try to begin thinking in terms of cycles. Typically every six weeks, there is a new flu on the horizon. Some people can catch a flu every three months, while other people catch one with each new cycle (six weeks). The timeline for each individual looks different and depends on an array of factors.

Flu Varieties

Everyone reacts to the flu differently. Some people come down with very high fevers and delirium, while others run low-grade fevers and go about their lives with little disruption to their usual activities. One reason for these varied responses may be the numerous flu varieties people can contract.

There are a number of flu strains that all appear different in shape and size. Some flus can result in bad fevers, while other strains only trigger sinus issues. Some of the varieties provoke stomach issues while others stir up both stomach and sinus problems.

Frequently people will mistake the sizable mucus buildup in their systems for the stomach flu. In these instances, people are often suffering from a flu that is mostly sinus-related and their stomach issues are due to the large quantity of mucus they have swallowed. In a case like this, a person may experience severe bloating, loss of appetite, and/or mucus-related coughing or vomiting.

Mucus, Bronchitis, and Pneumonia

In many cases, flu viruses create mucus. The mucus that’s created drains most heavily during the night. Depending on the strain of flu you contract, you may not have a cough initially. But, as the mucus drains into the chest and builds up in the lungs, there is a significant chance you will begin to develop one. After a few days, the mucus may either begin to break up, or additional sinus issues may arise and cause even more mucus to drain into the chest.

Bronchitis can arise from this mucus resting in the chest. If the mucus remains in the chest for too long, bacteria can begin to grow and proliferate as well. You might be told this bacteria is pneumonia bacteria, but this isn’t true. Pneumonia bacteria is simply the label medical communities have given the condition. Medical science believes there are 90 varieties of pneumonia bacteria, but this bacteria is still a mystery to medical communities. It’s really one or more of the dozens of varieties of undiscovered streptococcus or chlamydia bacteria that cause the symptoms of bronchitis and pneumonia. Streptococcus and chlamydia are two of the bacterias (among others) that are not yet fully understood or identified by medical science and research. If the person’s system is already severely rundown, these bacteria can take hold and someone may end up with a pneumonia diagnosis.

Everybody has different varieties of pneumonia bacteria in their system, which is actually different varieties of streptococcus, chlamydia, and other bacteria. Chlamydia bacteria is usually harmless, but can cause issues if you are severely zinc deficient, consistently make poor food choices, cease practicing self-care, dealing with a lot of stress, and relentlessly wear your body down. In this situation, there is a higher likelihood that the bacteria begins to proliferate and cause problems.

Sinus Infections

It is important to know that not all sinus infections are related to a flu virus. Oftentimes chronic sinus infections are connected to chronic, low-grade streptococcus infections. If a person who has this kind of streptococcus infection contracts a flu virus, he or she may see his or her sinuses severely worsen for a period of time before returning to the usual level of affliction. This increase in sinus-related issues will likely occur every time the person catches a flu virus.

Sore Throats

Similar to sinus infections, sore throats are not always flu-related. Sore throats can also be due to chronic, low-grade streptococcus. Unfortunately, a throat culture is not always able to accurately determine if a sore throat is strep-related. A child or young adult with a really severe case of streptococcus may have white spots on the back of the throat or tonsils that can be swabbed and accurately identified as streptococcus, but oftentimes, once streptococcus moves out of its early stages, swabbing for a culture does not accurately determine if someone has the bacteria. If streptococcus does not show up in someone’s culture, it does not mean streptococcus is not present in the body. Frequently, chronic streptococcus can get into the lymphatic system and trigger a sore throat. In this case, taking a throat culture would most likely not reveal an accurate assessment of the person’s streptococcus. You can learn more about streptococcus in my radio show.

You can also suffer from an Epstein-Barr virus related sore throat. If you have Epstein-Barr in your body, it has the ability to move through the lymphatic system and arise in the throat. This is especially possible if someone lets his or her body get rundown. People can experience this type of chronic mono at different times throughout their lives. The virus can cause redness and soreness that typically emerges on only one side of the throat, but can appear on both sides in certain instances. Although the throat can be incredibly sore, you will not develop a cough, fever, mucus, or sinusitis. You can learn more about Epstein-Barr virus in my book Medical Medium. In my upcoming book Thyroid Healing, I share more in-depth essential information on this virus than ever before.

Preventative Steps

When it comes to flu viruses, you may be wondering how to avoid catching something in the first place. Fortunately, there are many preventative steps you can take to protect you and your loved ones from catching a flu bug.

If you do feel like a flu virus is starting to cause trouble in your system, quickly implementing some of these steps can help knock out the virus early before it has the chance to hit you hard.

* One important and more obvious step is to not let yourself get too run down. If you’re noticing yourself becoming more tired, frazzled, or stressed out, try to ramp up your self-care practices, including getting adequate sleep.

* Having a bottle of high-quality liquid zinc sulfate on hand at all times is essential. If you have the slightest inkling you might be starting to feel flu symptoms, squirting zinc directly into your throat and letting it coat the area can be a powerful defensive measure. If you are very sensitive to zinc, try using just a few drops. Even this can make a difference.

* Be mindful of your hands and try to wash them regularly as you go throughout your day. From shaking other’s hands, to pushing shopping carts, to opening doors, there are countless ways your hands can come into contact with unwanted germs and flu viruses. If you then proceed to rub your eyes, there is a high likelihood you will catch a bug. For this reason, keep your fingers and hands away from your eyes and face whenever possible.

* Carry handi-wipes (you can use alcohol based or alcohol-free wipes) with you when you are out and about. If you visit a restaurant, take out a handi-wipe and use it before you begin your meal. Take handi-wipes when traveling as well. Airplanes are typically filled with people fighting off various flus and viruses, and handi-wipes can help keep you protected. When on a flight, wipe down your seat and armrest with a handi-wipe, try to keep your hands clean, and avoid rubbing or touching your eyes. Anytime flu viruses seem more rampant than usual, opting to wear a face mask on the plane can be a valuable precaution as well.

* You never know if a cook working in the kitchen or a waiter delivering your meal is suffering from flu-related symptoms, so it is best to order piping hot dishes when dining out. The heat from an incredibly hot dish can help kill off a flu virus that might have contaminated your food. In a restaurant setting, it is best to stay away from raw dishes, such as salads, for numerous reasons, one of which is to avoid catching a flu.

These are just a few things you can do to protect yourself, and all of these simple preventative steps can work together to make a huge difference for your overall health. These measures aren’t meant to make you obsessively fearful, instead, I hope they bring about awareness and empowerment as you work to stay flu-free.

The Flu & Food

Another preventative step involves the foods you choose to include in your diet. You maybe surprised to learn that flu viruses, like other viruses, love to eat. Even many medical professionals still do not know that viruses feed off certain food sources. Instead, these professionals believe that viruses grow and reproduce through host cells, but this information is incorrect. The truth is, viruses are hungry and can proliferate when fueled by certain foods. Eventually, medical research and medical science will discover that food entering a virus is one way a virus grows and reproduces. Because of this, it is important to eliminate certain foods when are you are trying to avoid catching a flu.

Which Foods Feed the Flu?

It is important to understand that the foods you put into your body can either help prevent viruses or help feed and support viruses. Connecting with this concept and starting to make some dietary changes can help you begin to protect yourself.

Dairy products, which I discuss in both Medical Medium and Life-Changing Foods, are one group of foods that can feed and strengthen viruses. You may feel fine after eating a piece of cheese or drinking a glass of milk, but these dairy products can silently create chaos in your body by feeding any virus, whether it be a flu virus, Epstein-Barr, cytomegalovirus, HHV-6, HHV-1 or HHV-2 (you can learn more about the herpes viruses here), bacteria, such as E. coli or MRSA, and parasites or worms. If you’re looking to avoid certain health issues, including a flu virus, eliminate milk, cheese, butter, kefir, yogurt, ghee, and any other dairy product from your diet. If you already have the flu, keeping these products out of your diet can help reduce mucus buildup and may result in fewer and milder symptoms overall.

Eggs are another food to remove from your diet when you want to avoid catching a flu or you want to lessen the severity of a flu you may be fighting off. If you are unwilling to give up your traditional eggs and toast breakfast, at least bring a hearty amount of raw garlic into the meal. Even though the eggs will feed the flu virus, the raw garlic will work hard to combat the bug.

Removing chicken from your diet is another incredibly beneficial step. You maybe wondering— what is wrong with chicken? To better understand the answer to this question, you first need to learn about avian influenza.

Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)

Flu viruses have the ability to feed off birds, and they especially love to feed off chicken. Bird flu viruses tend to feed off the bird’s adrenal glands and flesh cells and can often lead to dangerous and damaging outcomes including flesh deterioration.

You do not have to cut chicken out of your diet if you really enjoy eating it, do not struggle with any health issues, and incorporate an abundance of leafy greens, fruits and vegetables alongside the poultry, but if you are doing everything possible to avoid catching a flu, removing chicken from your diet can be advantageous. Eliminating this food can be especially beneficial if you’re hoping to avoid a stomach flu. If you wish, you can add it back in when you feel like you’re in a safe zone where you’re not seeing a lot of people developing the flu.

The Cons of Chicken Soup

If chicken feeds flu viruses, should you be eating the go-to cold and flu meal— chicken soup? The answer is unfortunately, no. You don’t have to scrap the soup altogether though! Try removing the chicken and fill the soup with a hearty amount of antiviral and anti-flu foods like onion, garlic, herbs like thyme, rosemary, and oregano, and mineral rich veggies like celery, cabbage, bell peppers, and mushrooms! Or, if you really want to keep the chicken in the soup, be sure to add even more of the onion, garlic, herbs, and vegetables to boost the nutritional and antiviral value of the soup.

Have you ever made chicken soup and left it in the fridge overnight? The next time you went to reheat the soup, you may have noticed a thick film of coagulated fat on top of the soup. This fat can draw oxygen out of the blood, slow down the liver, prevent oxygen from reaching the immune system, liver, and heart, and can work against the immune system as it tries to beat back whatever virus or bacteria the body is fighting off.

The chicken in chicken soup is also likely to feed the flu virus. That being said, many of the other components that make up chicken soup can be wonderful support for someone trying to fight off a flu. Garlic and onion are two components that can be especially beneficial. Other foods you may want to consider adding to a healing soup include celery, carrots, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, cabbage, zucchini, and any other veggies you wish. A fantastic mineral-rich Healing Broth recipe can be found here.

You maybe convinced that the chicken soup you ate the last time you were battling a flu was the reason you were able to fight off the virus so quickly. Parts of the chicken soup— namely any vegetable or herb you used— most likely provided you with the hydration and mineral salts that contributed to your healing. In contrast, the chicken in the soup actually fights against your healing by feeding whatever virus you are suffering from. If you or a loved one seem to come down with a sinus infection, stomach bug or flu multiple times a year, definitely consider swapping out chicken for other nutrient dense foods.

Zinc Shock Therapy

Around five or six years ago, I was traveling during the height of flu season. Countless people were suffering from coughs, fevers, sinus issues, and more. I was worn out from constant travel and inadequate sleep, and was feeling run down. During this time, I remember noticing a tiny tickle arise in my throat. I realized that I was coming down with a flu, and Spirit instructed me to do “zinc shock therapy.” I immediately squirted 4 dropperfuls of liquid zinc sulfate directly into my throat. I let the zinc sit in my throat and administered another dose two hours later. Just a few hours after that, I administered even more. The next morning I woke up and the subtle signs of an emerging sickness were completely gone! Because I had caught the signs early enough, I was able to fight off the virus with the help of Spirit’s instruction and the power of liquid zinc sulfate. This dosage may be too much for you but you can bare it in mind as a tool to consider or consult with your health practitioner or doctor.

Preventing a flu from arising is always ideal, but if you end up catching a virus, know that there are plenty of things you can do to help combat the bug and protect yourself from any future flus you may come up against.

Healing Herbs & Supplements

There are a variety of powerful supplements you can use as weapons against a flu virus. Try to keep zinc and some of these other supplements readily available for you and your loved ones. That way if flu symptoms do appear out of nowhere, you will have the tools to take it on right away!

Olive leaf maybe a great daily supplement for anyone fighting off an Epstein-Barr-related symptom or condition, but it can also be great for anyone who is starting to feel sick and noticing flu-like symptoms. In this instance, upping the dose of olive leaf can be beneficial.

Echinacea and goldenseal are two other supplements to incorporate when you are fighting a flu. If you are battling streptococcus, strep throat, tonsillitis, or strep-related sinus infections you may also benefit from incorporating these two healing supplements periodically.

Elderberry syrup is another incredible flu-fighting supplement. Lomatium root is a wonderful support and has been known to help with flu symptoms, bronchitis, pneumonia, sinus problems, fever, and more. Not only is eyebright a beautiful herb, it is also amazing at knocking down flus and streptococcus in the system. If you are suffering with a cough, consider bringing cherry bark into your protocol. Mullein leaf, which is incredible for shingles-related symptoms and conditions, is also great for fighting the flu, sinus infections, bronchitis, and lung issues.

Propolis can be a powerful immune system support and can be a great supplement to take if you start to feel the beginnings of a flu arise. Taking a daily dose of Ester-C or liposomal C is a great practice. And, if you are starting to feel sick or are battling a flu, increasing the amount can be highly beneficial. Red root can be another helpful supplement to incorporate. When purchasing these supplements, try to find high-quality capsules or alcohol-free tinctures. You can check out the Medical Medium preferred supplements page for specific recommendations.

All different kinds of teas can provide benefits for someone suffering with flu symptoms. For even more healing-might in each mug try squeezing lemon into your teas. Steeping a deep red glass of rose hips tea and adding in ample lemon juice can be particularly powerful and incredible for sore throats.

If you are a mom trying to help keep your kiddos flu-free, try using some of the healing supplements in smaller dosages. Working with a practitioner to figure out the perfect amount for your unique child may be best.

Healing Foods

The healing broth recipe available here is a great one to incorporate into your meals if you are working to fight off a flu. And even if you don’t have a bug, the healing broth can be nourishing, supportive, and help keep you from picking up any unwanted virus.

If you have a copy of Life-Changing Foods, check out the recipe for turmeric-ginger shots as well. This immune-boosting tonic can be powerful, but may be too strong for some people. If this shot is too intense for you, try making turmeric-ginger tea by steeping chunks of ginger and turmeric in boiling water. Drinking this soothing liquid throughout the day can shorten the length of your flu and help protect you from developing bronchitis or pneumonia.

Moving Forward

You probably plug in and charge up your phone, computer, or tablet on a daily basis. Next time you plug in one of your favorite electronics, ask yourself how can you regularly charge up your immune system as well? Hopefully this article has given you a few ideas that you can begin to implement. The more you can strengthen your immune system, the more likely you are to avoid getting the next nasty flu that cycles through your area.

If you are already suffering with a chronic illness, battling the elements of a flu can be unbelievably miserable. Even if you are a relatively healthy person, fighting off the flu can be a frustrating challenge. Hopefully the knowledge you’ve learned here as well as the tips, tricks, and recommended supplements and foods detailed can help provide you with the tools needed to protect yourself and your loved ones. Practice self-care, try to take preventive steps when possible, and know that your body has the ability to heal from whatever nasty bug may come your way.

7 Top Health Benefits of Maca

by Nanci January 5, 2019
written by Nanci

Maca powder

Maca, a root that belongs to the radish family, is most commonly available in powder form. Grown in the mountains of Peru, it has been called “Peruvian ginseng.” Maca’s benefits have been long valued, and has recently been popularized as a supplement and food ingredient.

There are no serious known side effects of maca, but like any other supplement it should not be taken in large amounts. When you first start using maca, it’s best to begin by taking smaller amounts and building up; even 1/2 teaspoon is a good place to start. And at the other end, 1 tablespoons (of the powder) is an average daily dose. Rotating a few days on and a few days off is often recommended. Taking too much can lead to adverse effects and throw your hormones out of whack. If you experience this, you should take less or wean yourself off completely.

Maca is good in smoothies, salads, drinks, cooked foods, and juices. A couple of easy and tasty ways to use it: Our easy No-Bake Vegan Cocoa Maca-roons; and two delicious smoothies — Mocha Maca Banana Smoothie and Strawberry-Vanilla Maca Smoothie.

Don’t add it to anything that’s very hot because it will lose all its benefits. The taste can be a bit odd at first but it gets more tolerable and it depends on what you mix it with. Its flavor has been described as “malted” or like toasted oats. Smoothies, puddings, raw sweets, and juices seem to be the best ways to use maca powder.

1. Vitamins
Maca is rich in vitamin B vitamins, C, and E. It provides plenty of calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and amino acids.

2. Sexual function
Maca is widely used to promote sexual function of both men and women. It serves as a boost to your libido and increases endurance. At the same time it balances your hormones and increases fertility.

3. Women’s health and mood
Maca relieves menstrual issues and menopause. It alleviates cramps, body pain, hot flashes, anxiety, mood swings, and depression. If you are pregnant or lactating you should avoid taking maca.

Maca powder and root4. Energy
Within days of using maca your energy level may increase. It is also known for increasing stamina. Many athletes take maca for peak performance. If you find yourself tired most of the time, experiment with maca to see if it helps. Just a small amount could be exactly what you need for a boost!

5. General health
Maca helps your overall health in a number of ways. It supplies iron and helps restore red blood cells, which aids anemia and cardiovascular diseases. Maca keeps your bones and teeth healthy and allows you to heal from wounds more quickly. When used in conjunction with a good workout regime you will notice an increase in muscle mass.

But be very cautious if you have a cancer related to hormones like testicular and ovarian, among others. If you have liver issues or high blood pressure you should ask your doctor before taking maca.

6. Skin
Many people take maca for skin issues, as for some people it helps to clear acne and blemishes. Another benefit for your skin is that is decreases sensitivity. In hot or cold weather, maca may help your skin withstand extreme temperatures.

7. Mood balance
If you find yourself overcome with anxiety, stress, depression or mood swings, maca may help alleviate these symptoms, though of the evidence is anecdotal. Some have reported an increase in mental energy and focus.

Packing up Wellness for Travel by Meghan Trompetter

by Nanci December 23, 2018
written by Nanci

Despite all our efforts to stay healthy and avoid sickness while travelling, let’s get this straight – everyone get’s sick. And I’m talking all kinds of sick. From experience – there have been nasty colds in freezing Ireland, food poisoning in Northern Thailand, parasites in El Salvador and well, the shits, all in-between. Travelling exposes us to to a variety of opportunities that can compromise our immune system and increase the risk 10-fold.

I will say this, like an old record, I wish I knew back then what I know now about these simple remedies that I could have carried in my backpack all those years to help fight the battle. Whether you are travelling for business or pleasure, these are always good to have on hand.

Probiotics

Probiotics are my number 1 recommendation for a healthy gut environment, which is essential for your entire immune system. Taking probiotics throughout travel will help maintain a healthy balance of good bacteria, keep your immunity up and digestive system operating healthy.

Ginger chews

I discovered this lovely chew while Cat-Skiing in the middle of the nowhere in the mountains past Pemberton last year. We had 10 people crammed in a SnowCat scaling bumpy terrain with diesel exhaust slipping through the windows, yuck. But to our rescue, our Ski-guide passed around ginger chews and I was so impressed! This is a powerhouse herb – and with it’s anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties this is something I always have on hand. Ginger is excellent for nausea, migraines, digestion, aches, motion sickness and indigestion.

Tiger balm

Ahhh the heavens bring us Tiger Balm. From my first days in SE Asia this magical stuff never leaves my purse. Excellent for temporary relief of sore mucles, joint aches, pains and bug bites! Careful though – this is powerful stuff, don’t go touching your eye’s after use – ouch!

Coconut oil

Bless coconuts. Coconut oil can be used for so many things – there is an entire book out there written about it. Containing antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial antioxidant benefits – it’s no wonder its called the miracle oil! Travelling tips: eye-make up remover, hair conditioner, toothpaste, sunscreen, moisturizer, apply to cuts, heck eat a tablespoon once/day for a healthly source of fat intake and a boost of energy!

Activated charcoal

My first greeting with this stuff was in Northern Thailand after some not so good carrot curry and spring rolls. This supplement is good for food poisoning, gluten reaction, stomach bugs, gas, bloating and diarrhea. Be sure to take with lots and lots of water to avoid dehydration.

Rescue remedy

Loose your luggage? Realize you left your favourite bikini hanging on the railing? Hangover causing your heart to beat outside of your chest? Easy tiger – no need to worry. This may no be that magic potion to make you feel like batman – but it will keep the anxiety at bay. This blend of flower essences is sure to make you calm and chill out. If focusing on your breath does not help to calm you down, put a few drops of rescue remedy under your tongue and close your eyes.

Lavender

Following rescue remedy and staying on the trail of aromatherapy – we come to my last traveling buddy. Lavender essential oil. This wonderful essence is another recommendation I give to almost all clients. The nervous system and lavender go hand-in-hand. When you are feeling stressed or can’t sleep, place a few droplets in the palm of your hand and rub them together followed by 3 deep inhalations with your hands over your nose. Bliss.

Thank you Meghan! Share her journey as it comes, exploring all coasts, mountains, jungles, cities and surf! Winding through farmers markets, organic farms and hidden gems with tips and tricks for the health conscious mind. http://www.meghantrompetterrhn.com/

The Theme for January is RESET – Power Path Monthly Forecast

by Nanci December 14, 2018
written by Nanci

The main theme for January is RESET.

We have been through a time of transition, change, scatter, chaos, and unexpected challenges as well as powerful opportunities for creativity, improvement and personal growth. The general influences of this year will continue to support our evolution enabling us to shift our experience of life to a different energetic platform, one of a higher vibration and expression of essence.

The TRANSITION of December has already put choices, decisions and changes into motion. Now comes the RESET. In order for us to have the right setup for this to occur, we must allow a RESET on all levels. This month is a balanced combination of going within to sort what’s true for you and to reset your relationship with how you manifest that truth, and activating a plan of action that pushes you to step up to a higher level of functioning based on that truth. The days of being unconscious with your thoughts, feelings and behaviors are over. It is time to focus on eliminating destructive patterns that will stand in the way of your spiritual evolution and to allow what is down the road to unfold in your life without needing to control or second-guess every step.

There is a lot of unknown that needs to be accepted and embraced with a trusting heart. This may be difficult for those that have a need for control, or who struggle with the negative aspects of the goal of Dominance, the goal for the year. Practicing patience and surrendering to the prevailing rhythm and flow will not only help keep you balanced and present, but will facilitate in the RESET process.

Find out more about Dominance from TRENDS 2016.

RESET is not necessarily an active process although we do recommend that you focus proactively on what you are intending to RESET. Some RESET is triggered from the outside and some from the inside. The RESET that comes from the outside is a situation that creates an opportunity to change your relationship to something or someone. It creates something different than what you had before. A RESET trigger from the outside can often cause disappointment especially if there was any attachment involved.

Sometimes an event from the outside that causes a disturbance can occur in a country, community, home, business or family. This may trigger a RESET that may take a bit of time to integrate as everyone comes online with it in his or her own timing. In order for something to be RESET, the current structure or relationship to it needs to be broken, dissolved or taken offline.

Think of what happens at night when you sleep. You take yourself offline and let go of how you consciously held and experienced your physical reality for the day. It gives you a chance to RESET. There is a saying, “sleep on it”, that refers to a solution that may come from the RESET that happens while you sleep. This month it would be a good idea to work with your sleep cycles especially if you are in the process of resetting something big in your life. This month’s influences with retrograde planets and instinctive triggers will also support periods of going within to do some deep resetting of old patterns, unconscious behaviors, belief systems and relationships to your power, creativity and personal truths.

Our server at the Power Path was down for one week. As inconvenient and frustrating as that experience was, we chose to see it as an opportunity for a RESET that came from the outside. We did not plan it. It was unexpected. And now we need to trust that our new server will somehow serve us way better than the old one.

A RESET from the inside stems from a conscious decision to change something that is no longer a viable expression in your life. A RESET from the inside is an intention to get back into balance what feels out of balance. On a small scale, this is often experienced during a daily meditation practice, an intention before you go to sleep, or daily spiritual discipline. On a larger scale it could be a complete reset of your values, belief system, personal truth and self- awareness. Larger scale inner RESETS are often accompanied by intense experiences of some kind that threaten the ego and false personality and may even cause one to feel like you are going a little crazy or completely falling apart.

Since completing a RESET requires a letting go as completely as possible of a container, pattern or attachment, it can be uncomfortable and can also bring up quite a bit of instinctive fear. It is crucial that you do not allow the fear to get in the way of the amazing opportunity for the RESET to take you towards a higher functioning life. When going through an inner RESET it is always important to express it in your physical environment. It will be a good month to make changes in what you have or how you do things to represent the inner RESETS that are in process.

The influences for 2016 hold tremendous opportunities for reaching much higher levels of experience, intuition, essence connection, creativity and personal expression. January is a month to sort out what will not support you in your RESET self and to consciously bring in what will. The higher centered influence of the year is already at work and if you will allow it, it will bring you many gifts.

For more on the influences for 2016, get TRENDS 2016!

How the month shows up

YOU PERSONALLY

There is a phrase, “get over yourself”. This refers to the ego attachment to an identity that drives negative or unconscious egoic behavior. It is often fueled by fear and completely disconnects one from essence and spirit. You have a choice to make this month about your relationship to yourself. Will you feed the ego or your essence?

The ego is limited. Essence is not. The only way to navigate a successful RESET that will serve you best is to choose essence over ego. You may ask, “How do I do that?” It starts with an intention to do so, including a spiritual practice or discipline, and then telling the truth to yourself when you fall off the wagon. It also requires trust, letting go of the need to control, and using your allies for support.

You have the opportunity for great change in your personal self -awareness this month. It will become very clear when ego is at work because it will not feel good. The truth telling and soul searching may be uncomfortable at times but if you persevere you will be rewarded. The higher centers always support essence expression, and a sense of expansion, synergy and synchronicity. These experiences will be the “highs” of the month, a necessary counterbalance to the “lows” you may dip into during some of your RESETS. Remember to rely heavily on your spiritual practice, your allies and your community.

RELATIONSHIPS

Relationships will definitely go through a RESET, some from the outside and some from within. As you find a new truth about who you are and what you want out of life, be prepared for changes in how you relate, express, trust, and manifest. Some relationships will survive and even thrive in a new intimacy and some will self-destruct. As long as you are coming from essence and anchored in your own truth, whatever changes and RESETS your relationships go through will be for your highest good.

This year’s influences are teaching us that we can no longer go about life insulated, isolated and alone. We are being magnetized towards right community and shown the power of co-creating our dreams when egos are set aside. We cannot stress enough the importance this month of the necessary RESET of the young soul hierarchical patterns into ones of equality and cooperation. You will feel the pull towards being with members of your “tribe” and ones with a similar philosophy and perception of life.

Toxic or abusive situations in family or work conditions may become intolerable and you may need to make some hard choices and decisions. Always get support. Your vulnerability is your strength and there is no time like the present to go for a RESET. This will be especially true in dysfunctional domestic situations.

HEALTH AND THE PHYSICAL BODY

This is a great month to RESET your beliefs about what is possible regarding your physical, emotional and energetic health. It is good to have an intention about how you want to “feel” without needing to know how you are going to get there. What if you were able to improve your health and physical well-being beyond what you can imagine?

To express and give support to the RESET in this area it is important to do something new, try something new, dance, move your body, change your wardrobe, take up a new sport, change your hair, lose some weight or gain some weight, join a gym, or change your diet. Remember to include the community support piece and do some of these things together with friends and family. This year is definitely not about the power of the individual but the power of the collective.

It is also a great month to take care of any dental work as teeth hold very old patterns. The challenges this month will be around teeth, bones, lungs and digestion. Remember that you cannot digest what is not yours. Tell the truth to yourself about what you have been carrying in your “gut” that does not belong to you. RESET that pattern.

ENVIRONMENT

Your personal environment should go through a RESET of some kind just to honor and give expression to any inner work you are doing. Be creative, move furniture, get rid of something old, bring in something new, or paint a wall a different color. Be present and pay attention to your personal environment so you can become aware of what needs a RESET. When you live with something day after day, you can easily become blind to it and not notice what does not function or serve you.

When resetting something in your environment, keep it fun and remember to be patient. Stay out of frustration, judgment or blame. Look to the higher centers for inspiration and try something new. Keep your intentions towards the improvement of your environment and get support.

It is also important to feed the higher centered experience of witnessing and honoring the incredible beauty in our environment. Make sure to take time every day to fully appreciate the gifts of the earth and sky. This will expand your awareness and RESET you into a deeper trust of the higher order of life.

With regards to climate and weather, expect their influence to support whatever process you may be going through. Weather related delays to your plans teach you patience and keep you flexible. The less fixed you are in your expectations, the more conducive to supporting the right RESET.

BUSINESS/PARTNERSHIPS/PROJECTS

This is a great month to RESET any projects, partnerships and business oriented communities. It will require some pruning of what does not support you and what does not support a greater expanded vision of what is possible. Notice where attitudes are fear based rather than trusting and adventurous. Decisions should never be made out of fear. Observe where limiting beliefs about what is possible are keeping your container smaller than it should be. This is a month where expansion is not only possible but also supported by the influences. You will need to have everyone on the same page.

If you have a new project or business idea this is a good month to put it into motion in some way, even if it is just creating a business plan. New people can come in as allies while partnerships detrimental to your vision may dissolve. This is an excellent month to RESET intentions, goals, plans, vision, infrastructure and commitment. Since this RESET may include both inner and outer triggers, be patient with the chaos, messy reactions and personal doubt that may be part of the process. Allow yourself to be guided by essence rather than by ego and watch for the opportunities that present themselves along the way.

DATES AND TIME FRAMES

January 1-7: The month starts off with an explosion of energy that fuels the need to get things straight in your life. This may be about relationships, your environment, projects, health or inner well-being. Traditionally we think of the beginning of the year as a time to set goals and intentions for ourselves. This is often accompanied by a need to release what has not gone so well in the year we are leaving behind.

As you contemplate your disappointed expectations it is very important to remember and give honor and credit to all the things that did happen, that you did end up manifesting and that you did accomplish. Spend some time in gratitude during these first few days of the year and use that gratitude as fuel for a new set of intentions and resolutions. Refrain from the old habit of transferring to your new list all that you did not accomplish on the old one. This is a new year and a new time and a new energy. Reframe what you wish for yourself for this year as a RESET and allow this whole month for refinements to that list as you move through your own personal RESETS.

Around the 5th of the month we begin a Mercury retrograde cycle that supports going within to seek your own truth and anchor some practices that will support your inner RESETS. This does not mean you will become a hermit for the rest of the month. It means you will have a container that will remind you of what is important to you and give you the focus to handle the details that will support the experience you want.

The set up is the important focus for this time frame. It is important to release residue from any experiences of conflict you may have witnessed or been a part of during the transition month of December so you can move into your RESET from a place of neutrality.

The opportunities for higher centered experiences as well as instant manifestation are lining up.

January 8-15: This is a time of great highs and lows. It is important to think of both experiences as positive as they each have their unique way of supporting you. So if you have a day where you feel under water and you cannot put two thoughts together, take a break, go within, listen to music and keep your tasks simple. The support of community and a spiritual practice is also important during this time.

The “highs” will be related to higher centered experiences that may suddenly put you on a different track in your thoughts and plans of action. Where you always saw a closed door all of a sudden one will open and you will be gifted with an opportunity that may surprise you. Take it unless it compromises your integrity or involves those of a different mind-set. Anything you can do that gives you greater access to the spirit world, altered states and a connection to your unseen guides and allies will be helpful, supportive and integral to the success of this time period.

January 9: New Moon is Saturday, January 9 at 6:30PM Mountain Time (MST). An excellent time to focus on RESET. If you have not already done so, this is also a good time to focus on your intentions for the year or revisit the ones you anchored over the New Year for refinements and changes. You may be surprised at how quickly some of them may manifest if you are really clear about what you want and it comes from essence and your heart.

Due to the influences right at this time, you may feel some energy around intention at a standstill. It is simply at a still point gathering power from love, beauty, essence connection, community, prayer, joy, gratitude and awe. You can always help it along by feeding it this positive fuel.

January 16-22: This is a great time for healing, rebalancing, getting your health online, completing important tasks and improving your life through RESETTING what is necessary. Choices that have been put into action at the end of last year or the beginning of this year begin to show you what is needed in order to manifest them. It could be reaching out for help, bringing in new relationships, fixing details on a project, restructuring something, or simply doing something new and different as an expression of a RESET.

It is a busy energy that needs to be managed through good practices and disciplines. This is a good time to create structures that will support your RESETS in terms of personal health and physical well -being. Make a to do list, visit the dentist, and balance your time between doing and being. Celebrate what is working and coming to fruition and be neutral and persevering towards what is still in RESET mode. Be patient.

January 23: Full Moon is Saturday, January 23 at 6:46PM Mountain Time (MST). This is a moon that supports personal expression and an experience of personal power. Acknowledge what you have accomplished this month in terms of RESET and own your talents, unique capabilities and personal power. Celebrate yourself!

This is a good day to be in community and to inspire each other with new ideas and possibilities. It is also a good moon to anchor new partnerships and commit to new relationships, projects, travel and something you have always wanted to do but never thought you could. What you put into motion during this moon will have a great engine of energetic and higher centered fuel behind it for manifesting in the future.

January 23-31: As we come out of the more internal retrograde period, look for opportunities for bursts of sudden manifestation around your desires and dreams. The full moon energy continues to give us a lot of energy that will help to complete necessary RESETS. You may feel during this time frame like you have been spit out the other end of a long dark tube. It is a time of rebirth and waking up. A new set of reference points that are higher centered and give you the experience of what is possible will be your new guiding light.

Meanwhile, on the planet and maybe even in your own personal environment, those that cannot move into the positive expression of the higher centers will be activated negatively and we may see an upsurge in violence and self-destructive activity leading to despair and desperate reactions. Never take this personally and practice great compassion this whole month for those who are suffering. When you have one extreme you always have the other side as well. We all have to step up and be big enough containers to hold all of it in love, compassion and forgiveness.

What To Do When Positive Thinking Fails

by Nanci November 11, 2018
written by Nanci

Let’s say that you have something you wish to change in your life and you go searching for an answer; for a solution. More than likely, in your search for creating change, you will find something about positive thinking. Sounds like a good idea. Sounds like a possible solution. The problem is it rarely works.

Positive thinking requires a lot of time and effort and, most of the time, it offers few results. The biggest concern is that most individuals regard positive thinking as a definitive solution to life’s challenges, and this can lead many to believe that they are somehow failing. All too often, when you work really hard at positive thinking and things don’t change like you want them to, you decide that there must be something wrong with you.

But if positive thinking and affirmations have not worked for you, you are not alone. And, there is nothing wrong with you! Instead of trying to create change through the non-stop effort of positive thinking, use these four pragmatic tools to help you out when positive thinking fails you:

1. RELEASE YOUR THOUGHTS

Positive thinking is about finding a “better,” happier thought to replace the negative thoughts that are running through your mind. But what if those thoughts aren’t yours to begin with? Science is now backing the idea that 98% of the thoughts, feelings, and emotions that we experience don’t actually belong to us. We are all like psychic radios picking up on everyone around us. Is it any wonder positive thinking doesn’t work? You’re trying to fix thoughts, feelings, and emotions that don’t even belong to you.

For the next 3 days, for every thought, feeling and emotion you have, ask, “Who does this belong to?” When you ask the question, if things feel lighter in your world, it was never yours to begin. Knowing this makes it easier to let it go.

2. CHANGE YOUR POINT OF VIEW

Positive thinking doesn’t work because what you’re doing is trying to use a positive affirmation to overcome a negative point of view that you already have about yourself. Your point of view creates your reality. If you have negative points of view about yourself and would like a different reality, you’ve got to change your points of view. Working really hard to think positive doesn’t overcome anything. In fact, the more you try to maintain the positive thought, the more aware you are of how the opposite is what’s true for you. Try this instead: Say, “Interesting point of view. I see that point of view” for every point of view that you notice throughout your day. Gradually, your points of view will lose their value and significance, they will stop being “real and true” to you and then they become simply interesting. You now have the ability to choose something else.

3. FOUR QUESTIONS THAT CAN CHANGE ANYTHING

The thing about affirmations is that they are based on decisions and conclusions. You decided what was wrong with you that needed to change; you concluded that a particular positive thought was the answer. Decisions and conclusions stop new possibilities from showing up because your cognitive mind can only recognize what it already knows. To go beyond what your mind already knows, ask questions about everything that you would like to be different: What is this? What can I do with it? Can I change it? How can I change it? These four questions will serve you better than anything in life.

4. CHOICE TRUMPS EVERYTHING

Most of the modalities that focus on positive thinking and affirmations are all about doing; you have to do this, you have to do that. It’s all about effort and hard work and willpower. No one can do this for long. Rather than the effort and struggle of “doing” recognize that everything in life is a choice. Be empowered to know that YOU know and choose what truly works for you. A bit rusty on choosing? Here’s a tool. Choose in 10-second increments. Here’s how:

You have 10 seconds to live your life. What do you choose? Ok, that 10 seconds is over, now what do you choose? Every 10 seconds. Choose. Choose again. Choose something else. When you begin choosing every 10 seconds, things start to change – quickly. The life you truly desire is possible. It’s not about the effort of positive thinking. It’s about choice and the empowerment of knowing that your choice creates.

The life you truly desire is possible. It’s not about the effort of positive thinking. It’s about choice and the empowerment of knowing that your choice creates.
